What is AVID?

AVID is a year-long academic elective class that prepares students for high school, college, and beyond.

What happens in the AVID program?

Students receive academic instruction in critical reading and writing, focused note-taking, studying, academic speaking, and organization.

Students receive academic support from tutors through collaborative study groups.

Students are motivated to pursue academic excellence through guest speakers, and AVID team building.

Art class offers students many art experiences with explorations in the classics such as painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and crafts. Students will learn how to apply techniques using materials like charcoal, pastel, watercolor, clay, etc.  In addition to gaining confidence and proficiency working with a variety of mediums, students will learn about art appreciation and art critique.

At Will Rogers Middle School, students are getting their hands dirty in a classroom that looks more like a genuine bike shop than your standard middle school classroom. As part of the Power Bike program at Will Rogers Middle School, students learn about bike safety and the health benefits of cycling, and then venture out into the community. The second semester is an introduction to gas engines and how cars work. Even if you never plan on working on a car, this class will help you understand how they work.   We will work on small gas engines, learn about suspensions, transmissions, tires and more. Students will even be able ride and drive our go karts. Students who achieve a "B" or better in the second semester can skip "Auto One" at district high schools and go into "Auto Two".

Do you have a flair for the dramatic? Do you have an active imagination? Do you like to pretend to be someone you're not? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Drama class is for you. If you answered yes to all of these questions, then this class is definitely for you. In Drama, students explore the various skills and techniques utilized in putting together dramatic presentations. Through the use of various fun activities including music, movement, memory, rhythm, and short play scripts, students examine the wonderful world of the theater.

Computer Science Discoveries- Students will design websites, games, and apps and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving and fun. This is an introductory computer science class that will be covering topics such as programing, physical computing, and HTML/CSS.

The focus of Computer Applications is to familiarize students with several digital tools that they will be able to utilize throughout their academic careers, expose them to the basics of Computer Science, and improve their keyboarding skills. The major units of study include: Computer and Internet Basics, Google Apps (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Sites, Forms, Drawing), Video Editing and Stop Motion (WeVideo), Digital Literacy and Responsibility, Introduction to Programming (Scratch), 3D Modeling and Printing (SketchUp, TinkerCAD), and Game-Based Learning with Minecraft: EDU.

Student Government is a course where students act as role models and serve the school. As leaders of the school, they aim to promote and advance a positive school environment. Students learn various team building and leadership skills and how to apply them, including public speaking,  teamwork, creativity, goal setting, planning, kindness, productivity, and problem solving. Students in Student Government will also be responsible for organizing and planning the school dance parties, talent show, lunch time activities, and spirit days to practice the leadership skills about which they learn in the class.

Must complete an application to be accepted in this elective.

Students will learn how to use a camcorder and tripod to capture different shot types, conduct an interview of a subject, select the proper audio equipment, and produce quality video and audio using WeVideo.  Students are NOT required to appear on camera.

Students can express themselves by creating news stories, public service announcements, documentaries, instructional videos and the Mustang Morning News (being a news anchor is optional).

If students select media, their previous teachers will be asked if they are trustworthy, responsible, can follow class and campus rules, and can complete assignments. Only students meeting these requirements will be accepted.

Office Aide positions are secured through the front office and allow for students to deliver passes, place mail into staff cubbies, sort and organize paperwork, and more.

TAs help teachers with a variety of tasks, including grading and helping students.

Students who apply for this elective should be responsible, trustworthy, and self-motivated.

Students interested in becoming a TA or Office Assistant must talk to the teacher s/he would want to be an aide for.

Advanced Art offers artistic students many art experiences with advancement in the classics such as painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and crafts. Advanced Art students are either students who have taken art previously or demonstrate exemplary artistic skills. The advanced art class will also improve their digital art and photography skills while creating the school yearbook.
